Fighting with your fork: Nutrition in the fore front in the fight against Coronavirus

Curious about how foods might impact your immune response? It is well established that the deficiency of certain nutrients or their inadequacy can impair the immune response, while repletion of those nutrients can reverse this process. Your nutritional status forms the corner stone of the body’s defense capability and its ability to out invaders. In an effort to be transparent, I want to be very clear about stating that there is no direct evidence linking the consumption of specific nutrients as “protection” against the novel Coronavirus. The research continues to evolve, and no firm conclusions can be drawn yet. That said, both animal and human studies have shown promising outcomes suggesting for certain nutrients, increased intake above currently recommended levels might enhance immune function. Eating patterns matter too.

What is most empowering is that nutrition therapy presents a modifiable risk factor in the fight against COVID-19 ( or other acute or chronic diseases). It is a non-invasive modality -unlike chloroquine, as we figure out effective treatment and prevention strategies against the invisible menace. Your gut bacteria also play an instrumental role in shaping your immune response and a healthy gut is supported by the consumption of whole foods.

Please tune in this Sunday, April 26th at 10:00 am by clicking the FB link here or register here to find out how you can build your arsenal using whole foods as ammunition. It’s a free Zoom webinar, but you have to register first. Grateful to the India Association of Greater Boston for inviting me to present this free webinar to the public. Part 2 to be offered on Saturday, May 9th, 11:00-12 noon, EST, USA. Hope you can join in the fight against Covid-19!

  1. Good information. I’m a Home Economics grad from the University of Manitoba back in the day when they had that kind of faculty. I studied nutrition and am a believer in fortifying ourselves through a good diet, exercise, fresh air, friendship, and family. So important to eat well. Good reminder.

Love that you’re such a great fan of vegetables, your blog posts are so inspiring! I’m also trying to switch to a healthier lifestyle and started to mine for healthy recipes like yours. Also, I started a training plan with SportMerun tracker app, and I managed to get rid of some pounds. Your blog posts are super inspiring for me in this phase, thanks!

It’s commendable that you’re upfront that this is not a “miracle” protection against COVID-19. So much fake news has been peddled by hacks. That said, the importance of a healthy diet can’t be overstated. I must admit I fall short in that regard. I don’t cook so I rely so much on processed food. I should make an effort to eat whole food instead. It’s pricier, but in the long I know it’ll be more cost-effective.

  6. Hi AJ,
It is really important to be honest with my readers, any embellishment hurts them and ultimately me and my own credibility. You might also find that certain whole foods such as lentils and some whole grains are actually cheaper -however, fresh fruits and vegetables tend to be more expensive but will certainly pay off in the long run as you correctly noted. Thank you for stopping by!
